Getting Started:
Q: How do I connect to MORDOR?
A: One way to connect to MORDOR can be done by a simple telnet to mordormud.net port:4000 or just click here. If using Windows, click on the Start menu, click Run, and type telnet mordorhaven.net:4000. An alternative method is to use a MUD client. If you do not have a MUD client, check
here.
Q: How do I create a character?
A: When you first create a character you are asked for a name. Many names will already have been taken, so you will need to keep trying until you find a name you like and that MORDOR will allow you to use.
You will then be asked to input your password (you must do it twice).
After you have completed that you will see a menu. You should select each option 1-4 and input your desired choice. After each choice you will end up at the menu again, you may go back and change each option if you want. When all options (1-4) have been set you can press 5 to complete the process.
Options one and two are relatively straightforward. In option 1, you set your gender (sex).
In option 2, you set your race. There is a table that shows the most important information on each race, to help you make your choice.
In option 3, you can roll your stats. You should bear in mind what kind of character you want to play and what you want to be stronger in. In general, you will be best off with a balanced character with relatively high stats. You can reroll until you are satisfied.
The class order is option 4 and is perhaps the most difficult to understand. Basically, you should choose the what kind of class you would most like to play, and then mark that down as your first class then you should choose what you like most from the remaining classes and repeat. You have to do that until you have listed all of the classes in this order
You must use only the first 3 letters of each class to indicate it. e.g.,
mage would be mag, cleric would be cle, etc.
The class order has a variety of effects and should not be taken lightly as it will affect your character considerably. Since MORDOR is a mutliclass MUD, the information is used to balance your character. Once you have then all listed in one line hit enter and you should get back to the main menu. There you can verify that everything is correct and select option 5 to finish the character creation process.
Q: What is the Newbie School?
A: When you first finish creating your character, you start off in the MORDOR Newbie School. The Newbie School goes over some basic commands (killing mobs, training skills/spells, purchasing, wielding, fleeing, etc.) and gain some equipment (given to you or on some mobs) to help you get started by following the on-line directions. If you are new to MORDOR and/or mudding, it is highly recommended that you go through the Newbie School. If you skipped over the Newbie School, you may reenter the Newbie School by going typing recall, up, then north. You will not be able to reenter the Newbie School if you are above level 5.
Q: Where can I get some equipment?
A: When first starting off, the Newbie School is one source of gaining equipment. Type "get all corpse" after killing a mob. If you have autoloot on, autoloot does this automatically. To see if you have autoloot on, type "auto". If autoloot is off and you would like to turn it on, type "autoloot". Lots of mobs throughout the MUD have equipment on them. So, explore! Also, equipment may be purchased and sold at shops.
Q: I'm still confused and I need help!
A: An alliance called The Guardians of Mordor was created to be newbie helpers. Members of this alliance have a [Guard] flag next to their name. Type who to see if there are any Guardians online. Contact them using the tell command by typing "tell [character] [message]" (i.e. tell thamesbrook how do I wield my weapon?). If none are available, you may simply use the ask channel by typing "ask [message]" (i.e. ask how do I wield my weapon?).
Color:
Q: How can I get color in MORDOR?
A: There are many ways, but basically they are dependent on how you connect to the internet and what operating system you use.
1) If you use a dial up connection that uses HyperTerminal or some other program that only gets you into a Unix server, an advanced terminal applications can usually allow for ansi color. This typically depends on the application itself.
2) You can also download a client to your computer which gives you more advantages. There are quite a few clients located on the MORDOR download page for your convenience. Generally, you will need to download these clients and install them. Then, set the client up for use with MORDOR. For assistance, you can usually ask other players of immortals that are not too busy.
When you have completed either of these steps, all you need to do is log on and type "color". Enjoy!
Directions:
Q: Where can I find somewhere to kill creatures?
A: When you start playing MORDOR, you go through the MORDOR school and enter an arena. This is the best place to fight until you reach level five. To get to the arena, type "recall", up, then east. For other areas you need to know what level they were designed for so you will want to type "areas" to get a list of areas, next type "help directions" and these will lead you to the new areas.
Q: I cant find anywhere to sell the stuff I got from killing creatures. Where can I find a shop?
A: There are a number of shops throughout the mud and particularly in Minas Morgul (which is the area around Recall). The Minas Morgul shops are found south then to the east of recall. There are a number of them spread around that area. You need to find the right shop to buy the item off you. This is generally self explanatory. "Help map" gives you a layout of the shops and other important rooms within Minas Morgul.
Training:
Q: How do I increase my level, and where should I go to increase it?
A: Once you have attained enough experience to a level within a class, type "gain" followed by the "class abbreviation". For example, type "gain mag" to gain a mage level. For more information type "help gain" .
Q: How do I raise my statistics?
A: In case you forget the lessons in the MORDOR school, the Guildmaster is 3 south of recall. The Guildmaster will let you train up your statistics. To raise a stat, type "train" followed by the "stat abbreviation" (first three letters of the stat"). For example, "train con" raises constitution by one. Constitution and wisdom affect your current health and mana points. See "help train" for more information.
Q: How do I gain new skills?
A: When you reach a new level, you have the option to practice skills. To see what skills you can practice, simply type "practice". You practice skills with the Guildmaster just like training statistics. There are limits to how high you can practice a skill depending on your class order. Some skills have similar names, to avoid problems type in the full name of the skill after the word practice.
Affects:
Q: Help! I'm blind, what shall I do, I can't see!
A: The Angel or Demon one north of recall will cast spells on you whilst you are in the room, these spells will often cure evil affects like blindness or poisons. Also, you can buy spells from the Angel/Demon type "heal" in the room to see the list. Before you hit recall, check how long the affect lasts for, this can be done by typing "affects". If the affect only lasts for one hour, it is probably worth sitting the affect out. Also, a high level player may be willing to help you out.
Q: I keep getting told to get spelled up, what does this mean and how do I do it?
A: If you walk into recall, Tolkien will spell you up. This means he will cast a number of spells on you which will affect you in various ways (again type "affects" to see what they do). Recalling into the room will not work, simply go north then south.

Skills:
Q: My skills don't work, I think there might be a bug with it?
A: There are a number of skills that player have problems with, and some of them have requirements that you may not have fulfilled. Here is a list of the more common ones. Spells - To cast a spell type "cast [spellname] [target]". With aggressive spells in combat, "cast [spellname]" will work as it defaults to the person you're fighting.
Extra Attacks - Second, Third, Fourth and Fifth attack skills do not give you that many attacks a turn, it increases the chance of attaining that many attacks. If you are fighting a creature that is of a much higher level than yourself, you may find you get little or no attacks against such a beast. This skill is automatic.
Dual Wield - To wield a second weapon, it cannot be heavier than your first weapon. To use type "second [weapon name]".
Parry - This skill is automatic. It will parry some of your opponents attacks. You do not see anything happening in combat.
Grip - This is an anti-disarm skill. It is automatic. It won't stop you being disarmed, just reduce the chance of it happening.
Berserk - This skill works like the spell frenzy, except you just type berserk. It will not work while you are frenzied.
Fast Healing - This skill is automatic.
Ventriloquate - This skill doesn't work at the moment, it should work like it says on the help files.
Sleep - Looks like it doesn't work, but it does. In Mordor, you are often fighting creatures of a higher level than yourself so it is very difficult to cast on them.
Quests:
Q: What types of Quests are available on MORDOR?
A: There are two types of quests available AutoQuests and quests run by Immortals (ImmQuests).
Q: How do I get involved in an Immortal run quest (Immquest)?
A: If an Immortal is going to run a Quest, It will be announced to the mud immediately prior to the quest. The Immortal running the quest will explain everything once the participants gather. If an immquest is running typically you will see players with the [Q] flag. If you show up after an immquest has started, it is the decision of the immortal running the immquest to choose to allow other players to join or not. See "help immquest" for more information.
Q: How do I get involved in an AutoQuest?
A: Simply go one south and one west from recall to the Quest Master and type "Quest Request". He will send you on a quest. You must have an overall level of at least 25 to quest. Type score to see your overall level.
Q: What are the different commands for AutoQuests?
A: Type "help quest" for Info on AutoQuests.
Q: I need help with my quest, it's hard and confusing.
A: Not all quests may be completed. Also, quests are intended to be completed on an individual basis without assistance of any kind.
Q: What exactly is meant by individual basis and without assistance?
A: You may not be helped in any way by others. Including, but not limited to: spellups, directions, grouping, weakening of your target mob, moving someone's Quest item, etc.
Q: Are there penalties for breaking the rules and helping someone on a quest?
A: Yes, and they are severe both to the person on the quest and the person assisting.
Q: I've found someone's quest item, What should I do?
A: Absolutely nothing. Leave it where it lays and do not mention it to anyone.
Q: That quest equipment looks really neat on the list what should I get and how good is it?
A: The quest equipment is Nice equipment. However, You get what you pay for so choose wisely.
Channels:
Q: I can't see some of the channels! And I don't know how to use all of them. Can you help me?
A: When you type "channels" you will get a list showing you which channels you can use. These channels are generally used by typing "channel [message]". This is fairly straight forward, and you will soon pick up on which channels are used for what purpose. An example, "grats WTG Morgoth, Level 151 Woo Woo!" would send the message on the grats channel.
The only channel which isn't self explanatory is the Q/A channel. Which you type "ask [message]" and "answer [message]". Also, you cannot talk on some channels as they are for automated messages.
Grouping:
Q: If a/the group member(s) quit(s), how can I remove them from my group?
A: Simply type "nofollow", which will remove you from anyone else's group, and remove all members of your group too. This is also useful to get rid of sick pets and then kill them.
Q: How do I communicate with the various group members?
A: Simply type "gtell", or, "gt " for short, to communicate with the group members.
Q: How can I see the health of the other group members?
A: Simply type "greport", "gr" for short.
Q: Do I earn less experience from participation in a group?
A: Yes and no. Yes, you earn less experience from each kill. But, you will end up earning more experience if you go on a well planned out killing spree in an appropriate area.
Q: Is there a maximum level difference for different player levels?
A: Yes, the maximum difference in levels is 15. However, this restriction, doesn't prevent the AMOUNT of group members allowed in the group.
Q: Why can't I group with this person?
A: There are several possibilities which may be preventing you from grouping with a particular person. Generally, the reasons are: the person is too high of a level, or too low of a level; you are on from the same address; the other character happens to be your own character (no multi-playing interaction).
Q: When I move, my group member(s) aren't following me, why?
A: One of the following conditions MUST apply, if this is the case: Either the person is sleeping, resting, blind, doesn't have pass_door cast upon them, or is too low/high a level to enter the room, doesn't have the fly spell cast upon them; save, private rooms.
Q: Why did my pet stop following me / drop from my group?
A: You either died, ordered it to recall, ordered it to nofollow, it died, from a mob, player, disease, poisoned, starved to death, dehydrated to death, was charmed by another player, or you attacked it.
Q: Why do various members receive different levels of experience from the same fight?
A: A number of things can be a factor when determining experience for group members, in addition to the normal factors of experience, which are: how hard you hit, how frequently you hit, how hard your spells hit, frequency of your spells, and the level difference of the various group members.
Q: How can I announce to the room, my hit points, mana points, and movement, without them having to do a "gr"?
A: You can simply type "report", this is common courtesy for the tank of the group to do, especially if you want to be healed by the other group members. Additionally, it's common courtesy for the magic casters to do a report, when they are running low on mana or hps too.
Arena:
Q: What are arena battles?
A: Arena battles are intended purely for fun and has no ties to player killing. A death in the arena in the arena increases your arena losses by one and transfers you to the Loser's Circle. There is no other penalty. If you are victorious, you are transferred to the Winner's Circle and gain a point to your arena wins.
Q: How do I initiate a battle in the arena?
A: You must challenge the player you want to arena battle with by typing challenge
. Once the other player challenged types accept, the battle is initiated and both players are transported to the arena. Decline will stop the challenge. You must be at least an overall level of 10 to participate in arena battles.
Q: Why can't I find my opponent in the arena?
A: The arena consists of several rooms. Thus, it is your task to explore the arena and find your opponent.
Death:
Q: When I die, what happens?
A: All the players currently logged into MORDOR publicly humiliate you for hours over public channels. Prior to that though, your corpse, and your spirit are transferred to the MORGUE or to a room in your alliance. You will need to type "get all corpse", "wear all", and then "stand" and "recall".
Q: How much experience do I lose when I die?
A: A hell of a lot, but generally, 50% of the experience you gained since last leveling.
Q: What happens when I die while in the ARENA?
A: You die a non-lethal death of sorts. In other words, there's no penalty for having died in the arena, except your arena losses increases by one. What actually happens is, your "ARENA" flag is stripped, and you are restored.
Q: How do I get my stuff out of my corpse, after dying?
A: You simply type "get all corpse".
Q: Why did my pet stop following me/drop from my group?
A: It stopped following you, since you died. Go buy a new one.
